Flowerdrum Bags

Since 6 WORDS, I have been exploring new techniques, stitches and design ideas. Here are some recent commissions:

Over the last couple of years, I have been dabbling in embroidery and fabric collage. Finally an opportunity to show my small collection, titled 6 Words: Embroidered Stories.

All items are available ROGUE ART, and thru the Rogue-ish webshop next week.

While waiting for my next project to start, I decided to do a cushion cover for myself, inspired by a tune my husband wrote for me a few years ago. This took about 10 days all in all and I am glad it's finally done!

New Embroidery Project Summer 09

We are now back in Berlin, Germany, getting ready for The White Market! This is my dream market, one specifically for independent labels! Flowerdrum Bags are participating on two dates:
1 August
15 August

First though, we need a sign to show who we are! Thought it would be fun to creat a sign.....

It's a work in progress and more details will be added! Given the 14 day time frame, I really hope I get it finished!

The Project known as OPERASI BANTAL BUSUK

So, it's finally done! 2 weeks of work, in the intense heatwave currently slaying KL. Here are some pictures of the finished product. It's all ready for the exhibition on the 30th at Rogue Art in Kuala Lumpur.

My trusty threads!

If you are in KL, please do check out www.rogueart.asia for more details on PERSONAL EFFECTS.

As Yet, Untitled....

Here are some images of the Art project I am currently working on. The deadline is in a couple of weeks so  for the last few days I have been holed up with needle and thread, making it happen.

I still don't have a title for it. Also I am looking for two quotes to embroider on it. Everything is going according to schedule so far and friends who have seen it have given me pretty positive feedback. I feel encouraged and inspired by this project and I hope there will be more ahead!

While working I usually am inspired by tunes which I listen to over and over. Currently I am hooked on Zach Condon's voice, especially Elephant Gun.

Keepin' It Old Skool

As a lover of all things old and forgotten, it is with sadness that I have noticed more and more haberdashers and fabric shops closing down. Less and less people know how to sew, embroider, knit and crochet. Perhaps this is because there is no longer a "need" for these skills. But what about the fun you can have, with these skills!

While I knew a few stitches, I started off knowing very little about embroidery. Thru trial and error and a little bit of research, I first started with these pieces for friends

for Yee I-lann

for Lena Ng

for Yasmin Khan

unfinished for Suhana Dewi Selamat with her 6 word story.

Each bag takes 10 -14 days to complete and are all one off pieces, made with each friend in mind. Whilst mainly experimenting with embroidery, I have also added collage and embellishing to each bag, to create texture along with the usual Flowerdrum riot of colour.

I am greatly influenced by the work Jenny Hart does and have always wondered why very few people who have these skills have bothered to explore them. Which then led me onto to thinking about crafts as art and the interesting bridge between the idea of making vs creating. Where does craft crossover to "Art"?

Fortuitously, I am getting the opportunity to explore this question, by being involved with an upcoming art exhibition. It will be my first foray into the "Art world" so I am excited and anxious about what I can come up with.......
